Chapter 2 in Oh, For the Love of Coffee!
It was an attic cluttered with junk. There were shields, and swords, and rusted pieces of armor; brushes and mirrors that glowed with a sickly green light…I knew enough about mythical magic not to touch those. I turned around and saw an eye staring right at me. It was in a jar. Yuk! Then I looked behind it and saw just about the most disturbing thing I had ever seen. A mummy. In a sundress. With beads. O. My. Gods.
I couldn’t move, I couldn’t think, I couldn’t remember my name. I just stood there, transfixed. Then, she, (I’m assuming it’s a she), sat up, looked straight at me with marble eyes, and said clearly in my mind, “I am the spirit of Delphi. Speaker of the prophecies of Phoebus Apollo, slayer of the mighty Python. Approach, seeker, and ask.”
“Uhhh…” What the heck do you ask a mummy?! “Um, what do I do now?” I know, dumb question. I should have asked something dramatic like, “How do I defeat the evil minions of Starbucks?”, or, “What must I accomplish to achieve my goal of conquering the coffee monsters for good?” But when a seventy year old mummy in tie-dye talks to you, you end up fresh out of interesting questions.
Green smoke poured out of her mouth and turned into a cup of Starbucks coffee. For one horrible moment, I thought I was going to have to drink it, but then something appeared in the coffee. Words in Greek swirled in it while the mummy spoke them in my mind.
To the city in the West where it all began
An endless chain run by a monster clan
Unorthodox acts coupled with caffeine
But you will be watched by a presence unseen
Friend or foe is now unknown and hidden
Arriving at the gates with one more than bidden
The smoke went back into her mouth and she said nothing more.
